Week of May 14, 2018

This has been a very busy week!  It was great that we were able to get outside every day in the beautiful weather.  We have been learning about farms.  We learned that farms have different types of buildings that a town.  We learned that silo’s hold feed for animals on a farm.  We watched a video and learned about how cows are milked.  We also learned that when sheep are sheared they don’t feel it – just like when we get our hair cut.

Butterfly Update:  We were able to complete our Butterfly Journals this week because ALL 5 of our butterflies emerged from their chrysalis!  We released the butterflies in the Parsonage prayer garden.  We were able to see close up how butterflies use their tongue like a straw to suck the nectar out of a flower or juiced out of an orange.

Religion:  This week we recognized that when we help and care for others we are living God’s love.  Living love shows love for God.

Social Studies:  We reviewed what a compass rose is.  We looked at maps and created a map using a story sequence.

Week of May 7, 2018

We had such a fun week again!  The weather for our field trip to the zoo was beautiful!  It was so nice to see real animals that we have learned about.  One of our favorites were the Meerkats.  We also thought the baby rhino was adorable!  We had so much fun planning and making our Mother’s Day gifts.  We hope you enjoy the pinch pots your children made for you.  It was so exciting to be able to design something special for you to use to keep your rings or other small things safe.   We worked hard to make the muffins for Muffins with Mom.  We practiced reading the directions, measuring, and being patient!

Religion:  This week we recognized that Mass helps Christians celebrate and live God’s love.  Holy things are found in a holy place.
Language Arts: This week we worked with understanding skits.  We practiced reading with fluency and expression.  Our comprehension skills were focused on using prior knowledge, recognizing text structure, characters, confirming predictions, and drawing conclusions.  Our vocabulary words were: huff, puff, costume, props, and scenery.  We practiced our writing by writing about our visit to the zoo.

Week of April 30, 2018

We had a very busy, fun week!  We had so much fun on our field trip to the main public library.  The bus ride was very interesting, as we weaved in and out of construction through downtown Akron.  We really enjoyed the songs, dancing, stories and making musical instruments.  We learned about different types of animals and what makes them unique.  We learned that mammals are warm blooded and have live births.  Birds have feathers, but not all can fly.  Fish have fins and gills.  Amphibians are cold blooded, lay eggs and have very porous skin that needs moisture.  Reptiles are cold blooded, lay eggs, and hard scales.

Religion:  This week we recognized that when we help and care for others we are living God’s love.  Living love shows love for God.
Language Arts: This week we continued working on increasing our comprehension skills by re-reading the skit, The Glum Princess.  We used our prior knowledge, recognized text structure, identified characters, and confirmed predictions.  We looked at multiple meaning words such as present.  We worked with vocabulary words huff, puff, costumes, props, scenery.  We have been working with blending sounds to decode words, as well as segmenting words and focusing on the medial vowel sounds.
Math:  This week we worked on understanding measurements.  We learned that we measure different things in different ways.  We measure time using a clock and calendar.  We measure heights and widths with rulers and yardsticks, and measure distances in miles.
Science:  We learned about magnets.  We learned that magnets are a material or object that produces a magnetic field. The magnetic field is invisible but attracts or repels other magnets.
