Week of April 23, 2018

What a great week to play outside!  We have been able to enjoy the good weather by working extra hard in the mornings and taking extra time at recess.  This week we learned about Earth Day and the importance of taking care of our Earth.  We discussed ways we can each help to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.  One of our favorite stories was The Curious Garden by Peter Brown.  We learned how one little boy was able to change and improve and entire community.  We also learned about Miss Rumphius and all the beautiful wildflowers she grew, making her community beautiful.  Our caterpillars arrived this week.  We are keeping a journal of their activities and are very excited to watch them change and become butterflies.

Religion:  This week we discovered that Jesus celebrated God’s love and invites us to do so also.  We understand that Jesus is with us when we gather at Mass.  We also learned that when we help and care for others we are living God’s love.

Language Arts:  This week we blended sounds to decode words.  We identified apostrophes and recognize singular possessives.  Our memory words were:  put, for.  Our vocabulary words were:  gull, pet, hospital.  We worked with synonyms while reading our stories.  We used comprehension skills, focusing on recalling details and visualizing.

Math:  This week we completed our unit focused on 2-dimensional shapes.  We identified and named circles, squares, rectangles, triangles, and hexagons.  I was very impressed with how well everyone did on our test!

Science:  We reviewed that animals need food, water and shelter to survive.  We then learned about dinosaurs and discussed that they would have needed the same thing to survive.

Week of April 9, 2018

Welcome back from our Easter Break!  We jumped right back into learning new things in math, reading and writing this week.  Our class also worked on the bulletin board by the office by making spring flowers as part of a science experiment about absorption.  We watched Charlie and the Chocolate Factory with Gene Wilder with our 1st and 2nd grade friends.  Watching the movie helped us appreciate and enjoy the school musical, Wonka, Jr.  Our 4th – 8th grade Drama Club did an awesome job!  We are excited to come back over the weekend to see it again AND take a chance at winning a Golden Homework Ticket!

Religion:  We learned that Mass is a prayer of thanks for God’s love.
Language Arts:  This week we worked on identifying words with beginning, middle and ending /m/ sounds.  We also practiced recognizing when the end of a sentence needs a period or an exclamation mark.  As we are writing our sentences we are also working hard at remembering to put space between each word.
Math:  This week we started our new unit focused on 2-dimensional shapes.  We identified and named circles as having a curve, with no straight lines or vertices.  We worked with squares recognizing they have four equal sizes and four vertices.  Triangles we identified as having three sizes and three vertices.
Science:  We finished our ocean unit by learning about the ocean environment.  We explored shells (love listening to the ocean in the conch shells), read about different types of ocean life, and plants.  We loved seeing so many of the things we learned about in Finding Dory!

COMING UP:

Language Arts—Our focus will be on P/p sounds at the beginning and end of words.  We will be learning about synonyms and antonyms for “big”.  Our memory word will be:  put.

Science—We will be learning about dinosaurs and making dioramas.
