Week of August 22, 2016

It has been a great first day in kindergarten.  THANK YOU so much for your generosity in providing supplies for our classroom.  Although this has been a short week, we reviewed several important items. We talked about the importance of washing our hands really good by washing our hands for as long as it takes to sing the Happy Birthday song to ourselves.  In addition, we reviewed how to cough and sneeze into our arm, rather than into our hands so that we don’t spread as many germs.  I am very proud of what a good job the kindergartners are doing adjusting to school.  This week we focused on getting to know our new friends, how we are different and the same.  We also explored our classroom and the school.

A few reminders …

  • *      I would encourage you to send a water bottle with your child each day.  It is warm in our room and we are working hard!  Please do not send bottles that need to be screwed on as most children have difficulty with the tops and they are easily spilled.  In addition, please be sure to only send water – not juice.
We have snack each morning.  Please do NOT send juice boxes, candy, fruit roll ups, or anything extra sweet and sticky.  This is an opportunity for your child to learn about healthy choices.  Suggested snacks include:  cheese & crackers, fruit, veggies, yogurt, pretzels, popcorn, goldfish.

  • *      Please do NOT send your child to school wearing a belt unless they can buckle and unbuckle it themselves.  It is not part of the kindergarten uniform.

COMING UP …

  • *      Monday is a half day with the entire class (7:50-11:20).

  • *      Tuesday will be our first FULL DAY!  Our “specials” also start on Tuesday.  On gym days your child may wear their gym clothes all day, including tennis shoes.
Monday:  Gym                                     Tuesday: Music
Wednesday:  Gym                              Thursday:  Computers, Library

  • *      Letter/sound recognition and math assessments will begin.  Please remember that each night your child will bring home the “Poem of the Week”.  Please practice reading this poem with your child several times each night.
