Week of September 12, 2016
We made it through our first full week of
school! A BIG thank you to all the
parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles …. that were able to attend Open
House. It was so nice to talk with so
many of you. Our Flat Stanley’s are all
ready to be mailed. If you haven’t sent
in your addresses, please send them next week.
This week we had our first visit to the Library. Mrs. Children read us a story and we learned
where some of our favorite books are located in the library. We can check out a book every week, as long
as we bring back the previous week’s book.
Don’t forget to send your child’s towel and bag back on Monday!
Religion: This week we learned that God created the
world because of his love for life and beauty.
We learned that beauty and wonder are created everywhere. We should praise God for his gift of creation.
Language Arts: We met a new SuperKid friend, Oswald. He likes different types of animals. We learned about the otter, ostrich, octopus,
ox, and ocelot. We worked on recognizing
the difference between fiction and non-fiction stories. The comprehension skills we focused on this
week included: using prior knowledge,
character, setting, and making predictions.
We are also working on recognizing rhyming words.
Math: This week we worked on reading, writing and
counting to 5. We are practicing how to
count one-to-one several different ways, but our favorite way is by playing the
game, Don’t Count your Chickens. We are counting to 40, and continued practicing
counting by 10’s. We are working on
filling a hundreds chart by adding two numbers every day to the chart. We are learning different strategies to help
us know where the numbers go, such as counting by 10’s, noticing the number in
the 10’s column or 1’s column, and sometimes we just “count on” from an
existing number.
Social Studies: In preparation of Flat Stanley’s travels, we
spent time finding different places on the world map. We focused on North America. We discussed how North America is really made
up of three different countries. We
learned that Canada is located North of the United States, and Mexico is
located South of the USA.
COMING UP …
Book of the Week: One by Kathryn Otashi. Focus words: floating, overall, comforted, budge
Language Arts: Continue working on writing our names
correctly; working with words that begin with the O/o/ sound; rhyming words;
writing and illustrating a nature book.

Time Capsule
10 Years ago the faculty and students of St. Paul left us a time capsule to open this week. Inside were pictures of students and staff. They also left us copies of newspapers, ad clippings and lists of popular items.

Week of
September 5, 2016
This was another busy week of learning new
routines. We did a great job learning
how to get milk and hot lunches. We have
been working hard to use polite words when being served, such as “Yes please”
and “No thank you”. This was a fun week
to be a student at Saint Paul. We opened
a time capsule that was left for us 10 years ago! We enjoyed seeing pictures of teachers that
are still at St. Paul, and many of our students’ older siblings. They also left us newspapers, ads, lists of
popular movies, music, and church bulletins.
We continued to work together on ways to be a good friend, and how we
can help each other learn. Be sure to
check out pictures on our blog of us during cooperative activities. We built puzzles, read books, and figured out
math problems using cubes. Our class pet
has joined us – Squirtle the Turtle. He
loves when anyone reads to him!
Please remember that your child needs a snack
every day. It is a long time between
breakfast and lunch for our young learners.
If you are unable to provide snacks on a daily basis, please contact me
directly so we can make other arrangements.
Religion: This week we learned about Gods gifts of day,
night and creation of the sky. We also
learned that God created the word because of love for life and beauty.
Language Arts: We continued our first reading/writing book
focused on the sound letter C makes.
Please continue to work with your child on writing their capital and
lowercase “c”, as well as their name. Your
child will be coming home with a reading book each night. Monday through Thursday are reading group
books that we read in class and then the books come home so you can practice
reading with them. Please be sure to RETURN THE BOOK EVERY DAY. We need them the next day for guided
reading. On Friday’s your child will
bring home a book of their choice to enjoy over the weekend. We also learned how to read wordless picture
books. Be sure look for your SuperKids
e-mail this weekend so your child can continue to practice reading!
Math: This week we continued to work on counting and
writing numbers 2, 3 and 4. We are counting
to 30, and started practicing counting by 10’s.
Social Studies: We read Flat
Stanley by Jeff Brown and then created our own Flat Stanley. We had lots of conversation about what we
would do if we were as ‘flat as a pancake’.
On Thursday information was sent home in your child’s Tiger folder with
information about how to participate in our class tracking Flat Stanley’s adventures.

Week
of August 29, 2016
This has been a very busy week of school. Over half of the children are taking very restful
quiet (except for the snoring) time. Kindergarten is a lot of work – there are so
many new things to learn! We are still
learning our daily routines and we were able to meet all of our specials
teachers this week. We met…
Mrs. Inglis – Religion Ms.
Hovan - Gym
Mr. Hoskins – Music Mrs.
Schillinger – Computers
We practiced what we do when we have a fire or
tornado drill. I was very proud of the
great job all of the children did leaving the building quickly and quietly when
we had a real fire drill. This week we
started learning about more of our classroom jobs. The children have a lot of
responsibility when it is their turn at a class job. They take their jobs seriously and I am sure
they would love to tell you about it when it is their turn.
Attendance is taken on the SmartBoard by creating an equation
of how many students are in our classroom and subtracting the number of friends
absent.
Calendar work is done on the SmartBoard by selecting what
day of the week it is, what day was yesterday, and what day tomorrow will
be. The calendar person also adds a day
to the monthly calendar and leads us in our days-of-the-week and month songs.
Weather work is done on the SmartBoard by graphing the
weather each day. Next week we will also
be learning how to read a thermometer and how to write the temperature.
Messengers run messages and notes during the day to other
teachers and/or the office.
Paper Distributors
distribute papers and supplies to classmates throughout the day.
Line Leaders lead the way
whenever we leave the classroom.
Cabooses are at the end of the line and are responsible for
turning off the lights.
Librarians help check classroom books in and put them away in
the correct bin each day.
Pet Patrol keeps an eye on Squirtle the turtle, making sure
to talk to him and can read him a book.
Next month they will also be responsible for feeding our turtle each
day.
This week’s jobs were done by:
Calendar: Jordyn
Weather: Christian
Messengers: Macy & Kyle
Paper
Distributors: William & Anthony
Caboose: Olive
Line Leaders: McKayla
Librarian: Sarah
Attendance:
Tayquan
Clean Up: Jonathan
Pet
Patrol: Don
Next week we will begin going to the library
on Thursday afternoons. We will learn
how to check out books. Please remember
to return the school library book on Thursdays.
We cannot check out another book until the first one is returned. Classroom library books can be checked out
every day – as long as the previous book has been returned.
Religion: We are learning about Creation and God’s
wonderful gifts we can find in nature.
Language Arts: Our focus this week has been on the “C”
sound, including how to write a capital and lower case “c”. We have been reading about a new friend named
Cass and her cat, Coconut. Cass likes to
cook. In Language Arts we started
working in our reading and writing skills groups. Our focus is on writing our names correctly,
and recognizing the beginning sounds we hear in words.
Math: We started working with numbers 1-4;
practicing reading, writing and counting.
We are also working on positional words:
above, below, middle. Please keep
practicing counting by one’s.
Social Studies: This week we learned about how children in
our classroom and all around the world are the same and different. We used a repeated reading of Elmer by David McKee to help illustrate
being the same and different. We focused
on vocabulary words: herd, patchwork,
jungle, and helpless. We have also been
practicing self-regulation and conflict resolution.
On-Line Opportunities:
Please be sure to check out our blog
(www.kindercubs-saintpaul.blogspot.com) for the latest pictures and information
about work your child is doing each day.
In addition, there are direct links available by clicking on the area of
interest for information, games and activities.
Information about Flat Stanley will come home next week. Start thinking about who you would like your
child’s Flat Stanley to go visit!
Reminder...The policy of St. Paul School regarding
absences can be found on page 7 of the Parent/Teacher Handbook. The policy requires that a student bring a written note from a parent stating the
reason for the student’s absence. The
written note is required even if your child was reported off by phone.
