Week
of January 23, 2017
We have been having so much fun this week getting
ready for Open House on Sunday and Catholic Schools Week. We are doing a good job counting by 5’s, as well
as counting backwards from 10. Keep
working with your child! We had fun
making a shoe so we can practice tying.
I know it’s a tough skill to learn, especially with so many shoes having
Velcro, but it is an important skill for students to learn. We have a wall of shoes congratulating those
that are successful tying on their own.
I hope to see everyone’s shoe up there very soon!
Catholic
Schools Week Mission Project— Thank you for all the donations for our First
Responders Care Packages that we will be putting together next week.
Religion: This week
we learned to appreciate neighbors and community. We learned that neighbors show God’s love and
that neighbors are community members. We
also learned about the Conversion of Saint Paul this week.
Language Arts: This week we worked on increasing our
phonemic awareness with the /e/ sound at the beginning and middle of words. Vowels are difficult to learn, but key to
being able to decode words. We used
informational text to learn about fish and fishing. Our vocabulary focus words this week were:
oxygen and gills. We finished reading
our class read aloud, My Father’s Dragon,
the first of a three book series. We
then started the second book, Elmer and
the Dragon. Ask your child the
adventures Elmer had on Wild Island.
Math: In Unit 5
we will be working with addition, as well as how to use addition to solve a
subtraction problem. To be successful we
first need to have a good understanding of which number in an equation is
greater. By counting on from the
greatest number it is easier to solve addition equations. As you work with your child, help them
recognize that by adding (or putting together) numbers, the sum has to be
greater.
