Week of February 20, 2017
This was a short week having Monday off for
President’s Day. We learned about why we
celebrate President’s Day, focusing on President Washington and President
Lincoln. We also learned about what the
President does and what patriots are. We
located Washington, DC on a map. We
learned that history tells the story of people and things that occurred in the
past.
We completed our read aloud, My Father’s Dragon by Ruth Stiles Gannett. The book was three separate stories, My Father’s Dragon, Elmer and the Dragon,
and The Dragons of Blueland. Be sure
to ask your child about Elmer’s adventures!
Religion: This week
we learned that Jesus is a sign of God’s love and that Jesus loves all
children. We discovered that Jesus loves
children and that we are all children of God and we have fun together.
Language Arts: This week we continued working with H/h/ at
the beginning of words. We focused on
increasing our comprehension skills by building vocabulary, using prior
knowledge, making predications, and recognizing cause and effect. We worked with positional (under, over, next
to, above) words while using riddle clues.
Our SuperKid friend is Hot Rod.
He loves to drive … fast!
Math: This week
we continued working with problem solving by creating and solving addition
problems. We worked with number pairs
that equal 8, 9, 10.
Science: We created our own cars as a part of learning about
wheels and axles. We had lots of fun
racing them.
COMING UP:
Language Arts: Focus on initial and medial U/u/ sounds. We are also working on writing sentences to
describe our illustrations.
Math: We will be
learning about subtraction.
Read Aloud: We will be starting Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White.

Week
of February 13, 2017
Although this was a short week, we were very
busy. Thank you to everyone that sent in
goodies for our Valentine Party. We had
so many goodies that we decided to keep some for the next day, too. On Tuesday we learned about a new fundraiser
for our school. We are selling Harry
London chocolates. Monies earned by the
school will be used for enrichment programs for students, including helping to
defray field trip costs. The candy sale
only lasts for 2 weeks. Please remember
that in order for your child to participate you must return the permission slip
SIGNED. You then become responsible for
selling the 48 bars in the box. All
monies are due by TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 28.
Religion: This week
we learned that Jesus is a sign of God’s love and that Jesus loves all
children. We also learned about Saint
Valentine and that Valentine’s Day is a time to share love.
Language Arts: This week we worked with H/h/ at the
beginning of words. We focused on
increasing our comprehension skills by recognizing the title of a story, and
how the title can give us clues about the story. We also worked with activating prior
knowledge, making predictions, as well as cause and effect.
Math: This week
we continued working with problem solving by creating and solving addition
problems. We continued to work with the
commutative property and how it applies to addition (2 + 3 = 5 the same as 3 +
2 = 5). We are working on decomposing
numbers by working with number pairs that equal 6-9. We are continuing to work hard at counting
backward from 20.

Week of February 6, 2017
We had so much fun celebrating the 100th
day of school! We counted … and counted
… and counted. We even made a chart
showing how we can count by 1’s, 5’s and 10’s.
We read books and sang the 100 Days song. We drew pictures and wrote about what we will
look like when we are 100 years old.
This week we finished our unit on insects. We learned that an insect is a bug, but not
all bugs are insects. Insects have six
legs, three body parts (head, thorax, abdomen), and an exoskeleton. We finished our studies by watching the movie
A Bugs Life, with popcorn and M&Ms,
of course!
Religion: This week
we learned that there are signs of God’s love all around us. We appreciate and support these signs. We also discovered that Jesus is the greatest
sign of God’s love.
Language Arts: This week we worked with E/e/ at the
beginning and in the middle of words.
Our vocabulary focus words this week were: riddle, sledding. We focused on increasing our comprehension
skills by discussing setting and using prior knowledge to infer information we
hear in a story. We also discussed the
difference between fiction and non-fiction.
We finished reading our class read aloud, Elmer and the Dragon, the second of a three book series. We then started the last book, The Dragons of Blueland. Ask your child how Elmer got home from rescuing
the baby dragon.
Math: This week
we continued working with problem solving by creating and solving addition
problems. We worked a lot with the
commutative property applies to addition (2 + 3 = 5 the same as 3 + 2 =
5). We are doing a great job counting by
5’s, and we are working hard at counting backward from 20.
