Week of April 10, 2017

This was such a fun, busy week in kindergarten!  We finished up our first Superkids Club book.  The SuperKids are showing us lots of different ways to go on adventures with our friends.  They are very good at using their imagination!  We started a new unit in math – geometry!  We are starting with flat shapes and will move into 3D shapes after our break.  This week we participated in the Student Council sponsored service project.  We decorated placemats for a local nursing home.  We decorated them for spring and Easter.

Holy Thursday Retreat:  We started our retreat with a prayer service.  As a part of the service 12 of our students had their feet washed, much like Jesus washed the feet of the 12 disciples.  William represented our class – great job!  After the prayer service we broke up into four groups of students Grade K – 8th grade to visit stations set up throughout the school and church.

Station 1:  The Lost Sheep  (Luke 15:1-7)
“Then Jesus told them this story: If any of you has a hundred sheep, and one of them gets lost, what will you do? Won't you leave the ninety-nine in the field and go look for the lost sheep until you find it? And when you find it, you will be so glad that you will put it on your shoulder 6and carry it home. Then you will call in your friends and neighbours and say, "Let's celebrate! I've found my lost sheep." Jesus said, "In the same way there is more happiness in heaven because of one sinner who turns to God than over ninety-nine good people who don't need to."

Station 2:  Loaves and fish (Mark 6:34-44)
“After Jesus had crossed the Sea of Galilee, a large crowd followed him, because they knew he had healed many sick people.  Jesus climbed a mountain with his disciples, and he could see that the crowd had gotten very large.  Jesus could see that the people were hungry.  He said to Philip, “Where can we buy enough food for them to eat?” Philip just shook his head and said, “Two hundred days’ wages work of food would not be enough for each of them to have a little (bit).” Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to Jesu, “There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish; but what good are they for so many?” Jesus told his disciples “Have the people recline.” There was a large, grassy filed that was clear and flat enough for all of the people, which numbered about 5,000.  Jesus took the food that the boy had, said a prayer of thanks and had his disciples start passing out the bread and fish.   As Jesus gave them food, they walked through the crowd and gave it to anyone who wanted, as much as they were able to eat.  When the disciples finished, there was enough food for everyone and there were still uneaten portions.  The Jesus said, “Gather the fragments left over, so that nothing will be wasted.”

Station 3:  Seeds on Good Soil (Mark 4:1-9)
“Jesus began to teach by the lake.  The crowd that gathered around him was so large that he got into a boat and sat in it out on the lake, while all the people were along the shore at the water’s edge.  He taught them many things by parables, and in his teaching said: “Listen! A farmer went out to sow his seed.  As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up.  Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil.  It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow.  But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root.  Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants, so that they did not bear grain.  Still other see fell on good soil.  It came up, grew and produced a crop, some multiplying thirty, some sixty, some a hundred times.”  Then Jesus said, “Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear.””

Station 4:  Jesus calls disciples (Matthew 4:18-22)
“As he walked by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea—for they were fishermen.  And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fish for people.”  Immediately they left their nets and followed him.  As he went from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John, in the boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets, and he called them.  Immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed him.”

Week of April 3, 2017

This was another busy, fun week in kindergarten.  We were really excited that the flower bulbs we planted in the fall have come up in our flower beds next to the gym! We have been learning about the 3R’s – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.  While reading This is Our Earth written by Laura Lee Benson, we learned that it is important to respect and reduce the amount of natural resources we use – even as kindergarteners!  We can turn off the lights when we leave a room, turn the water off as we brush our teeth, and ride our bike or walk instead of driving places.  In the book Once I Was a Cardboard Box – But Now I’m a Book About Polar Bears! by Anton Poitlier was made entirely from recycled materials.  The book had wonderful information and pictures about polar bears.  But, on each page was a cartoon strip that explained the link between recycling and the environment.

Although the weather was less than desirable, it was fun having a chance to ride on the Metro Bus to the main Akron library.  At the library we read books with the librarian, made a craft, and had a tour of the Children’s Library.

Religion:  This week we learned that prayer flows for our thankfulness for God’s love.  We started learning about the Passion of Jesus.  We had an opportunity to walk the Stations of the Cross with Fr. Pfeiffer, 3rd and 4th grade.
Language Arts:  This week we worked on blending sounds to decode words.  We focused on associating picture names with initial M/m/.  We worked on increasing our comprehension skills by using prior knowledge, generating questions and to make predictions.  We focused on memory words: no, of, I.
Math:  This week we focused on reading, writing, and counting numbers 16-19.  We used several techniques to help us count accurately to 20.

Week of March 27, 2017

We had so much fun this week exploring and learning about ocean life.  We learned that a group of fish is called a school, a group of whales are called a pod, and a group of sea otters are called a raft.  We also learned that a baby shark is called a pup!  We learned that ocean environments include plants, coral, and sand.  We also learned about different ways animals use camouflage to survive.  We used the information we learned to create ocean environment pictures.  We read A House for Hermit Crab and made puppets so we could reenact the story.  We finished up our week by watching Finding Dory.

Religion:  This week we discovered the Bible is God’s storybook.  We understand that Jesus told stories that reveal God’s love.  We recognized that we listen to stories of God’s love at Mass.  Father Pfeiffer met with us in the church to explain Stations of the Cross.  We learned that there are 14 stations.  The stations are a series of images depicting Jesus on the day of his crucifixion.  We practiced walking the stations and saying prayers.
Language Arts:  This week we identified and associated pictures with the initial, medial and final /n/ sound.  We worked on writing sentences; focusing on writing letters in words next to each other, and putting space between words.  We worked with positional words: on, in.  We focused our comprehension strategies by building background using prior knowledge, answering questions about a story, compare and contrast, and recognizing idioms.  Please help your child remember to bring their reading books back to school each day until they receive a stamp on the front of the book.
Math:  This week we focused on reading, writing, and counting numbers 1-17.  We practiced solving problems by using different strategies.  We used draw a picture and used objects to represent numbers.  We are learning to recognize number words 11-17.  We are doing a great job counting backwards from 20!
