Week of March 27, 2017

We had so much fun this week exploring and learning about ocean life.  We learned that a group of fish is called a school, a group of whales are called a pod, and a group of sea otters are called a raft.  We also learned that a baby shark is called a pup!  We learned that ocean environments include plants, coral, and sand.  We also learned about different ways animals use camouflage to survive.  We used the information we learned to create ocean environment pictures.  We read A House for Hermit Crab and made puppets so we could reenact the story.  We finished up our week by watching Finding Dory.

Religion:  This week we discovered the Bible is God’s storybook.  We understand that Jesus told stories that reveal God’s love.  We recognized that we listen to stories of God’s love at Mass.  Father Pfeiffer met with us in the church to explain Stations of the Cross.  We learned that there are 14 stations.  The stations are a series of images depicting Jesus on the day of his crucifixion.  We practiced walking the stations and saying prayers.
Language Arts:  This week we identified and associated pictures with the initial, medial and final /n/ sound.  We worked on writing sentences; focusing on writing letters in words next to each other, and putting space between words.  We worked with positional words: on, in.  We focused our comprehension strategies by building background using prior knowledge, answering questions about a story, compare and contrast, and recognizing idioms.  Please help your child remember to bring their reading books back to school each day until they receive a stamp on the front of the book.
Math:  This week we focused on reading, writing, and counting numbers 1-17.  We practiced solving problems by using different strategies.  We used draw a picture and used objects to represent numbers.  We are learning to recognize number words 11-17.  We are doing a great job counting backwards from 20!
