Week
of January 22, 2018
We have been having so much fun this week getting
ready for Open House on Sunday and Catholic Schools Week. We are doing a good job counting by 5’s, as
well as counting backwards from 10. Keep
working with your child! We had fun
making a shoe so we can practice tying.
I know it’s a tough skill to learn, especially with so many shoes having
Velcro, but it is an important skill for students to learn. We have a wall of shoes congratulating those
that are successful tying on their own.
I hope to see everyone’s shoe up there very soon!
Religion: This week
we learned to appreciate neighbors and community. We learned that neighbors show God’s love and
that neighbors are community members. We
also learned about the Conversion of Saint Paul this week.
Language Arts: This week we worked on increasing our
phonemic awareness with the /e/ sound at the beginning and middle of
words. Vowels are difficult to learn,
but key to being able to decode words. We
focused on increasing our comprehension skills by discussing setting and using
prior knowledge to infer information we hear in a story. We also discussed the difference between
fiction and non-fiction.
Math: In Unit 5
we will be working with addition, as well as how to use addition to solve a
subtraction problem. We worked a lot
with the commutative property that applies to addition (2 + 3 = 5 the same as 3
+ 2 = 5). We are doing a great job
counting by 5’s, and we are working hard at counting backward from 20.

Week of January 15, 2018
We had a really fun week learning about Martin
Luther King, Jr. and his ideals. We have
been working on appreciating how much we are alike and how our differences make
us each special. We looked at children
from around the world and compared how many things they do that are the same as
what we do – like play games, go to school and have friends and families. We had a great time using sparkly puffy paint
to make snowmen. We each painted a
snowman, but they were each unique – like each of us!
Religion: This week
we learned that we should appreciate our family members and what they can teach
us. We realized that we can be teachers,
too.
Language Arts: This week we worked on comparing E, F; e and
c. We practiced blending sounds to
decode words. We used illustrations to assist
us in decoding words. We created word
families -et, -ed, and -ell. The
comprehension strategies we practiced included:
use prior knowledge and using picture clues.
Math: This week
we continued working with problem solving by creating and solving addition
problems. We used number vests to create
equations, and we practiced using cube trains to solve addition equations. Please continue to practice counting on from
a given number. We learned that when
solving an addition equation we can put the greater number in our head, and
then count on with the smaller number to solve the problem.
COMING UP:
Reading: We will be
meeting our last SuperKid friend – HotRod.
We will be comparing letter-sound correspondence for I, L. F, E, and H.
Math: We
will be solving addition word problems within 10.

Week
of January 8, 2018
Monday and Friday’s Snow Days were quite a
surprise! Even having a couple of surprise
days off, we accomplished a lot this week.
We spent the week discussing the importance of manners and how we can
best show good manners at home and school.
Please keep in mind that when your child is going
to miss school you need to call the office.
When they return they will need a note explaining why they were
absent. If you need to pick your child
up early (except in an emergency), please send a note in advance.
As a reminder, we are no longer taking quiet time
after lunch. This has been a little tough
on a couple of the children this week, as they were tired! Instead, our time is being divided into
silent reading and whole-group read aloud.
Sick
Children:
Unfortunately, it is flu season L. Please remember that as much as we try to
protect the kids by having them wash their hands and we disinfect the classroom
each night, we still need your help. If
your child requires any type of medication to keep a fever down, they should
not be here! Children should go 24 hours
WITHOUT a fever before returning to school in order to minimize the spread of
illnesses. In addition, if your child is
experiencing a cough that can only be controlled by continuously giving them
cough drops, they should not be here! Of
course, if your child has not had a fever in 24 hours, but still requires
medication that can be administered by our nurse, they should certainly attend
school. If your child is not going to
make it to school, please call the office.
Students also need to bring a note the day they return to school stating
why they were absent. A note with a
parent signature or a note from the doctor is required by the State of Ohio.
Religion: This week
we learned about the importance of helping our neighbors and community. We learned that when we help each other we
are showing God’s love. We also talked
about how many people there are in our community that help us every day – like
policemen, firemen, garbage collectors, snowplow drivers, grocery store workers
and teachers.
Language Arts: This week we worked on increasing our
phonemic awareness with the /e/ sound at the beginning and middle of
words. Vowels are difficult to learn,
but key to being able to decode words.
During our journal writing time we are working on writing and recognizing
a complete sentence. Our focus is on
listening to our words and understanding that a complete sentence is a complete
thought. We are also working hard to
remember that a sentence starts with an upper case letter and ends with a
period.
Read
Aloud: The read aloud books are chapter books read by
me and discussed each day by the class.
We will utilize this time as an opportunity to explore reading
strategies suh as inference, comprehension, and making predictions. We are currently reading Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White.
Math: In Unit 5
we will be working with addition, as well as how to use addition to solve a
subtraction problem. To be successful we
first need to have a good understanding of which number in an equation is
greater. By counting on from the
greatest number it is easier to solve addition equations. As you work with your child, help them
recognize that by adding (or putting together) numbers, the sum has to be
greater.
