Kindergarten ~ Saint Paul School

Week
of January 22, 2018
We have been having so much fun this week getting
ready for Open House on Sunday and Catholic Schools Week. We are doing a good job counting by 5’s, as
well as counting backwards from 10. Keep
working with your child! We had fun
making a shoe so we can practice tying.
I know it’s a tough skill to learn, especially with so many shoes having
Velcro, but it is an important skill for students to learn. We have a wall of shoes congratulating those
that are successful tying on their own.
I hope to see everyone’s shoe up there very soon!
Religion: This week
we learned to appreciate neighbors and community. We learned that neighbors show God’s love and
that neighbors are community members. We
also learned about the Conversion of Saint Paul this week.
Language Arts: This week we worked on increasing our
phonemic awareness with the /e/ sound at the beginning and middle of
words. Vowels are difficult to learn,
but key to being able to decode words. We
focused on increasing our comprehension skills by discussing setting and using
prior knowledge to infer information we hear in a story. We also discussed the difference between
fiction and non-fiction.
Math: In Unit 5
we will be working with addition, as well as how to use addition to solve a
subtraction problem. We worked a lot
with the commutative property that applies to addition (2 + 3 = 5 the same as 3
+ 2 = 5). We are doing a great job
counting by 5’s, and we are working hard at counting backward from 20.
