Week of February 26, 2018

Thank you to everyone that helped make Dr. Seuss’ birthday so special. On Friday we had a great time celebrating Dr. Seuss’ birthday. We loved all the special readers that read a book to us. We read Green Eggs and Ham; One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish; Fox in Socks; And to Think That I Saw it on Mulberry Street; Wacky Wednesday; What Pet Should I Get; Oh Say Can You Say?; Go, Dog, Go!; Oh the Places You’ll Go!; Horton Hears a Who; and The Cat in the Hat. Religion: This week we learned about Stations of the Cross, walking through the Stations in Church. The Stations of the Cross are a 14-step Catholic devotion that commemorates Jesus Christ's last day on Earth as a man. The 14 devotions, or stations, focus on specific events of His last day, beginning with His condemnation. At each station we read about a specific event from Christ's last day. We then recited specific prayers, and then moving to the next station.

Language Arts: This week we continued working with initial B/b sounds. We worked with identifying and practiced writing upper and lower case R/r/. Our vocabulary focus words were: scrub, robins. We are practicing associating pictures with words. We are doing such a great job writing complete sentences in our journals each morning. We are continuing to read Charlotte’s Web. We are learning a lot about life on a farm.

Math: This week we continued using expressions to represent subtraction within 5. We are using 10-frames and counters to solve subtraction problems. We are focused on reading our equations carefully to know whether we are supposed to add or subtract numbers.

Science: This week we continued learning about our 5 senses. Our focus has been on sight, taste and smell. It took a few days, but we finally figured out what we could do to use all five of our senses at the same time (thanks Breylin). We really enjoyed popping and eating popcorn!

COMING UP:

Language Arts: Focus on initial R/r sounds. Working with word families –ub, -ag, -ug. Learning about synonyms.

Math—Representing, counting, and writing numbers 11-19.

Week of February 19, 2018

This was a short week, but very productive. We worked very hard to complete our poetry book before the deadline for the publisher. We are very excited to see our words and illustrations in print! We learned about President’s Day by learning more about two of our great presidents – Washington and Lincoln. We read several books and looked at lots of pictures of important American Symbols.

Religion: This week we discovered that Jesus loves children and that people everywhere are God’s children. We discussed that all people are children of God and that we can have fun together.

Language Arts: This week blended sounds to decode words, practicing encoding words beginning and ending with B/b/ sounds. We practiced adding “s” to the end of words and understanding that the plural of words means any quantity more than one. We have been practicing using our skills of segmenting sounds to help us read and spell words. We worked on our comprehension strategies using predictions by generating questions; draw conclusions, using prior knowledge, and understanding characters.

Math: This week we continued using expressions to represent subtraction within 5. We are using 10-frames and counters to solve subtraction problems. We used ourselves to use the strategy “act it out” to understand some of the equations we are solving.

Science: This week we started learning about our 5 senses. Our focus has been on touch and hearing. We brainstormed lots of words to describe how things feel, such as soft, rough, hard, sticky, hot and cold. We then sorted different items by how they felt and graphed our results. While learning about our sense of hearing we listened to lots of different animal sounds. We were really surprised to hear what a hippopotamus and zebra sound like! We then made shakers (you’re welcome), and practiced our “rhythm”. It was lots of fun singing and dancing while using our shakers.

Language Arts: Focus on initial B/b sounds, adding ‘s’ to the end of words; sight word ‘of’; comprehension strategies—making predictions, draw conclusions, understanding characters.

Math—Decomposing numbers within 8; subtraction within 5.

Week of February 12, 2018

We had so much fun celebrating the 100^th day of school! We counted … and counted … and counted. We even made a chart showing how we can count by 1’s, 5’s and 10’s. We read books and sang the 100 Days song. We drew pictures and wrote about what we will look like when we are 100 years old. Thank you to everyone that sent in things we could count. We really enjoyed the things we were able to put together and create a trail mix concoction! We also celebrated Mardi Gras on Fat Tuesday. We paraded throughout the school with our 1^st and 2^nd grade friends.

Religion: This week we learned about the season of Lent. We learned about the symbols for Ash Wednesday, and participated in the Mass. We found out that the ashes placed on our foreheads were from burnt palms from last year’s Easter season. We learned that why some people choose to give something up during Lent or some people like to do something extra during Lent. We have also been talking about “random acts of kindness” and how they are good practice any time of year.

Language Arts: This week we focused on the U/u/ sound at the beginning of words. We also worked on medial vowel sounds – which is a tough thing to hear. We are struggling the most with differentiating E/e/ and I/i/ sounds. We learned a lot of new descriptive vocabulary words during our read aloud. Our focus was on plain, glorious, fabulous, marvelous, victorious, mysterious, curious, nervous, industrious, courteous, hilarious, dangerous, delicious, generous, and cautious. We used our comprehension skills of understanding setting, characters, and using context clues.

Math: This week started working with using expressions to represent subtraction equations within 5. We are continuing to practice counting by 1’s, 5’s, 10’s and especially being able to count backwards from 20. This week we have found time to play Around the World – which we LOVE! Keep practicing those math facts at home!

COMING UP:

Language Arts: Focus on initial and medial U/u/ sounds. We are also working on writing sentences to describe our illustrations.

Math: We will be learning about subtraction.
