Week of November 28, 2016

We had a GREAT first week of the Advent season!  When we returned to school our classroom was decorated, the Christmas tree was set up in our classroom, as well as a Jesse Tree, our Advent Wreath with candles, and an Advent tree ornament calendar.  On Monday morning we gathered in prayer with the rest of the school (as we will each Monday in December) around the Advent Wreath.  Each morning until Christmas break we will be reading a bible story and adding a symbol representing that story on our Christmas tree.  We are also filling a Jesse tree.  Jesse Trees are a very old Christmas Tradition and first started in medieval times. They are used to help tell the story of the Bible from creation to the Christmas Story.  We also got a visitor in our classroom – our own ELF ON THE SHELF, which we named ‘Tiger’.

Thank you to everyone that donated to the canned food drive to benefit the Canton Food Bank.  Our school was able to donate over 40 bags and boxes last week!

TEACHING OUR CHILDREN ABOUT COMMUNITY SERVICE…

Our Student Council is sponsoring a Giving Tree this year to benefit the children serviced by Haven of Rest.  Please consider donating new mittens, gloves, hats, and scarves.  We are collecting donations until Friday, December 16th.

Thank you to everyone that sent in donations for our Winter Fun! themed classroom basket for the PTO sponsored, Breakfast with Santa on Saturday, December 10th.  If you find something you would like to add to the basket, please send it in by Wednesday.  I hope everyone is planning on attending the breakfast and meeting Santa, as well as bidding on any of the fun baskets that will be available.

Religion:  This week we learned about the Advent season.  We really appreciated so many 8th grade friends helping us make our Advent Wreaths.

Language Arts:  This week we worked with beginning and middle /i/ sounds.  In addition, we are continuing to work on distinguishing our medial vowel sounds – focusing on /i/, /a/, and /o/.   Our vocabulary focus was:  understanding the meaning of materials.  Our comprehension strategies included:  sequencing events, using prior knowledge, answering questions about a story, drawing conclusions.

Math:  This week we have been working with recognizing, counting and representing 10 items.  We are using the same strategies using a 10-frame to show different combinations that total 10.  We have been working hard at being able to count backwards from 10.  Please take a few minutes each day to have your child count for you.
