Week of March 13, 2017

Well this turned out to be a really quick week!  Even though we had two unexpected snow days, we accomplished quite a bit.  We wrapped up our studies of our five senses.  Your child should be able to tell you each of their senses and how we use them.  We had so much fun celebrating Saint Patrick’s Day on Friday!  We read stories about shamrocks and leprechauns.  In Religion class we even learned that there was a real Saint Patrick!  We started a new read-aloud with our 4th grade friends.  We are reading the Cricket in Times Square.  It is a Newbery Honor Book about a streetwise city mouse.

Religion:  This week we learned about Saint Patrick.  He lived in Ireland a long time ago.  When he was young he was kidnapped by Irish pirates.  He eventually escaped and returned to Britain where he became a cleric.  He then returned to Ireland to help the people of Northern and Western Ireland.

Language Arts:  This week we continued blended sounds to decode words, practicing encoding words beginning and ending with B/b/ sounds.  Our weekly reading books will be adventures our SuperKid friends have.  Please practice reading the story with your child each night.  The books need to be returned to school every day until we put a sticker on it.  Typically we will get a new story each Monday.  Once everyone in the reading group can fluently read the story, we will get a new book.

Math:  This week we continued working with taking away.  Subtraction is a bit more difficult and everyone can use as much practice as possible.   Consider playing a card game by dealing two cards to each player.  The two cards are then subtracted from each other, and the person with the greater number wins all the cards.

COMING UP:

Language Arts—Reading and writing R/r/ words; comprehension strategies— sequencing events, making predications, recognizing cause and effect, determining important ideas, and drawing conclusions using prior knowledge and picture clues.
