Week of October 16, 2017

We had such a busy week with several visitors.  Mrs. Lott stopped by to let us know she’ll be back next week!  It has been great having Mrs. Potter help us out the past month and we will miss her.  Ms. Dobol stopped by and read The Recess Queen by Alexis O’Neill.  Mean Jean is a bully in the story until she meets little Katie Sue.  Katie Sue doesn’t listen to Mean Jean’s comments, and instead invites her to play.  Turns out Mean Jean just didn’t know how to be a friend.  Ms. Mayholm a speech pathologist from Akron Public Schools visited and played a “volume control” game.  We are using numbers 0,1, and 2 to describe how loud we should be at different times during the day.  Zero is silent, like during a test.  One is how we talk quietly while working with our friends at our table.  And 2 is how loud we talk when addressing the entire class, like when we share our journal entries.

Religion:  This week we learned that God created and loves all people.  Because God loves us, we are able to love others.  We discussed and expressed thanks for the gifts that God has created.
Language Arts:  This week we continued working with beginning and middle /a/ sound words.  We are working at creating and recognizing rhyming words.  Our vocabulary words were:  swaying, hunched, and swooping.  The comprehension skills we worked on were recognizing plot, understanding characters, and determining important ideas.
Math:  This week we continued working with “same as”, “greater than” and “less than”.  We are working hard at being able to recall what number comes before and after another, without having to start counting at 1 each time.
Science:   This week we learned about plants.  We started with observing, sorting, and identifying the different colors and shapes of seeds.  We learned about the growth sequence of a pumpkin in preparation of our trip to the pumpkin farm next week.  It was interesting carving a jack-o-lantern.  We had lots of fun scooping out the gooey insides and sorting the seeds.  We are drying the seeds, and next week we will season them, roasted them and eat them!
