Week
of January 28, 2018
What an amazing week! We have been so busy learning and having fun
during Catholic Schools Week. Please
check out our Kindercub Blog for more pictures!
Sunday
Thank you to everyone that visited our classroom
during Open House. I hope you enjoyed
the poem our class wrote for you.
Monday – Celebrating Students
We enjoyed a dress down day – always fun! Students worked in mixed grade groups (K-2nd
grade) to learn about three different types of poetry. They then wrote their own poems in each
style. Students are working on writing
and illustrating their own poem, which will be published in a hardback
book. The information on purchasing our
Class Poetry book will be sent home next week.
In the afternoon we worked with mixed groups (K-8th
grade) to make bookmarks for the Cleveland Seminarians.
Thank you to PTO for providing ice cream treats!
Tuesday – Celebrating Community
We learned about the devastation and support still
needed in Puerto Rico after hurricanes Irma and Maria hit last year. As a way of supporting the people of Puerto
Rico we are putting on a Fun Fair! Friday evening 6:00-7:30. Each class planned a fun game for the
evening. Our class is creating a BALLOON
POP. We did a great job painting our board like a rainbow.
We participated in Adoration in the afternoon. Adoration is a ceremony that includes
Scripture readings, hymns, prayers and time for silent adoration. During Adoration the Blessed Sacrament is
exposed.
We decorated candles with colorful paper. The candles will be used at Friday’s Mass.
Candles will come home on Friday. Please
keep in mind that the candles CAN NOT BE BURNED!
We planned
and prepared our
BALLOON POP game for Friday
night’s Family Fun Fair!
Wednesday – Celebrating Nation
The Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District (NEORSD)
taught us about how plants use water each day.
We learned about impervious and pervious surfaces, and how they help and
harm our environment. We also learned
about rain gardens/rain barrels and soil boxes.
In the afternoon Mr. Doug, a scientist with the
NEORSD, shared his bug collection. We
learned a lot about why bugs, especially bees are so important to for our
environment.
Thursday – Celebrating Vocations
We worked with our K-8th graded mixed
groups to make cards with supportive messages for the Cleveland Seminarians. We will send the cards and bookmarks to the
Seminarians next week.
A huge thank you to everyone that participated in
the Teacher Luncheon. Our parent
volunteers that watched our classes and parents that provided the wonderful food
was very much appreciated.
Friday – Celebrating Liturgy
We participated in Mass in honor of Candlemas. Fr. Pfeiffer blessed our candles and we
processed from the PAC into the Church. Please
remember that the candles are blessed and should not be thrown away. If you do not want the candle, please return
it. The candles are covered in paper and
ModPodge. Please DO NOT light the candle!
In the afternoon we set up our booth in Boeke Hall
for the Fun Fair. Please be sure to join
us for food, games, and lots of fun!!

Week
of January 22, 2018
We have been having so much fun this week getting
ready for Open House on Sunday and Catholic Schools Week. We are doing a good job counting by 5’s, as
well as counting backwards from 10. Keep
working with your child! We had fun
making a shoe so we can practice tying.
I know it’s a tough skill to learn, especially with so many shoes having
Velcro, but it is an important skill for students to learn. We have a wall of shoes congratulating those
that are successful tying on their own.
I hope to see everyone’s shoe up there very soon!
Religion: This week
we learned to appreciate neighbors and community. We learned that neighbors show God’s love and
that neighbors are community members. We
also learned about the Conversion of Saint Paul this week.
Language Arts: This week we worked on increasing our
phonemic awareness with the /e/ sound at the beginning and middle of
words. Vowels are difficult to learn,
but key to being able to decode words. We
focused on increasing our comprehension skills by discussing setting and using
prior knowledge to infer information we hear in a story. We also discussed the difference between
fiction and non-fiction.
Math: In Unit 5
we will be working with addition, as well as how to use addition to solve a
subtraction problem. We worked a lot
with the commutative property that applies to addition (2 + 3 = 5 the same as 3
+ 2 = 5). We are doing a great job
counting by 5’s, and we are working hard at counting backward from 20.

Week of January 15, 2018
We had a really fun week learning about Martin
Luther King, Jr. and his ideals. We have
been working on appreciating how much we are alike and how our differences make
us each special. We looked at children
from around the world and compared how many things they do that are the same as
what we do – like play games, go to school and have friends and families. We had a great time using sparkly puffy paint
to make snowmen. We each painted a
snowman, but they were each unique – like each of us!
Religion: This week
we learned that we should appreciate our family members and what they can teach
us. We realized that we can be teachers,
too.
Language Arts: This week we worked on comparing E, F; e and
c. We practiced blending sounds to
decode words. We used illustrations to assist
us in decoding words. We created word
families -et, -ed, and -ell. The
comprehension strategies we practiced included:
use prior knowledge and using picture clues.
Math: This week
we continued working with problem solving by creating and solving addition
problems. We used number vests to create
equations, and we practiced using cube trains to solve addition equations. Please continue to practice counting on from
a given number. We learned that when
solving an addition equation we can put the greater number in our head, and
then count on with the smaller number to solve the problem.
COMING UP:
Reading: We will be
meeting our last SuperKid friend – HotRod.
We will be comparing letter-sound correspondence for I, L. F, E, and H.
Math: We
will be solving addition word problems within 10.
